Abstract

Myofibrils of the striated skeletal muscle are birefringent. Hence, the striated skeletal muscles can be well observed using the polarizing micro- scope. Like vertebrates, also invertebrates have striated muscles, like water fleas and other small crustaceans. Studies of the muscle motion of Daphnia spp. using the polarizing microscope and time-resolved video imaging are presented. Diffe- rent wave-like pattern of muscle contractions were observed. Simplicity of the experimental setup enables demonstration striated muscles of living water fleas (Daphnia spp.) in scholar and academic education.
